Ed Clark

Watercolour
Ed started painting in oils when he was in his thirties. Although he loved to paint, the pressures of his job and bringing up a family of his wife and four children left little time for painting activities. Retirement a few years ago offered him the opportunity to persue his painting with more time and enthusiasm. He switched to watercolour because of the loose and luminous effect they provided, particularly for skies, snow and water which are key elements in landscapes.
Since retirement Ed has taken workshops with many well regarded artists and has been on painting trips to England and Newfoundland with the renouned watercolour artist Jack Reid. Ed especially loves painting outdoors and organizes paint-outs for the Mississauga Watercolour Society every two weeks during the summer months. Belonging to eleven art societies and exhibiting in their many shows each year, both juried and non juried, provides him with a much appreciated exposure to the art world and a major part of his social life.

ARTIST STATEMENT
I love the outdoors and am an avid cross skier, hiker and canoest and many of my paintings are inspired by scenes from these activities. In particular, I am facinated with snow. I grew up in Quebec where the snow fell in late November and covered the ground until the end end of March. I could ski for 4-5 months a year. For me, as soon as I take my first stride on skis I’m in a different world. Everything is peaceful and graceful and you’re at one with nature. Hiking in the bright autumn colours, skiing past a stream coming out of the woods or just gliding through the woods in winter are things that turn me on. Watercolour lends itself particularly well to snow and landscapes and I strive to capture my emotion and excitement of these scenes in my paintings. There is nothing more satisfying than painting a scene that captures the same emotion you felt when you first encountered it.
