Original Relief Prints
Margaret started printmaking by taking a course in relief printmaking at Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Vancouver, while working as a landscape architect. She continued learning by studying 20th century prints and the landscapes of Asia and Cape Breton. She is currently based in Toronto where she has been making and exhibiting her original woodcuts, linocuts and collagraph prints since 1992. In 2005 she won the City of Toronto Purchase Award at the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition. She has participated in the Cabbagetown Art and Craft Show, Queen West Art Crawl and the Toronto Artist Project. Website: margaretrankin.com |
ARTIST STATEMENT
I am an experienced, self-taught printmaker working from my home studio. My prints have evolved from depictions of rural scenes from my travels to geometric abstractions based on textiles, man-made landscapes and architectural facades in the urban environment. I create original monoprints and limited-edition linocuts and collagraphs using repurposed materials such as packing cardboard and textured wallpapers. My blocks are hand-built and then inked and printed with artist grade light-fast ink on acid free paper. My body of work is about reimagining, reducing and simplifying the forms of the world I see around me, into ordered compositions.
