ARTIST STATEMENT
Armed with palette knives and acrylic paint, or soft pastels, I express my love of the rugged, yet peaceful, scenes that so many people are drawn to for refuge from our busy and chaotic world. I am a self-taught painter, painting a vast array of subject matter, but nothing comes close to the connection I have with the spirit of northern Ontario. My current process involves first capturing the landscape with my camera when I’m out in my kayak on the lake, and then selecting those images that allow me to create a composition with the delicate texture that makes the paintings come to life. I use palette knives to create the effect of a realistic scene when viewed from afar, but almost abstract up close. It’s a delicate balance between too much and too little. I hope to evoke the same feelings of peace and serenity that I experience while out on the lake, so that viewers have the opportunity to bring that into their home or cottage. Sharing that splendour with others is what motivates me and gives me joy. I also create small scenes with soft pastels on paper, using quick strokes to capture the light and energy of a scene.
