LAURA BEATON
Laura is a Toronto born award winning Visual Fine Art Artist. She began as a faux finishing/special effects wall painter, but a health issue led her to the study of Chinese Brush Painting and mixed media.
Laura’s 2-dimensional art are a fusion of ancient painting techniques and her own creations on rice paper using Chinese inks on rice paper, which are wet-mounted. Mixed media creations on canvas offer a diverse spectrum of art.
Her works have transcended cultures and are in private/permanent collections in Africa (King Edward, Busoga Region, Uganda), China (the government of CPR), the USA, and Canada. Laura’s unique use of this ancient art form is being studied in China by university art students.
Laura taught business at the college and high school levels. She co-founded a Mississauga-based consulting business in 1996 where she honed her business skills. Laura has regularly volunteered her time to coach artists in the business of art.
Laura is the 2017 Mississauga Marty’s winner for Established Visual Fine Art Artist.
Laura is preparing her online art participation in Tokyo, Japan via the International Calligraphy & Chinese Painters Society, scheduled for November 2021, where her painting ‘Spiritual Woods’ will make its public debut.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My art is about life’s labels and seeing beyond. From the darkness of life into the light.
I meditate, paint, and think about a painting. Emotions transmute to art using inks, gels, paste, and paint. There is a story on each canvas.
I paint in a fusion of styles, mostly in Chinese Brush Painting and mixed media, because my methods of constructing the art are just as vital as the creativity required to paint with subconscious purpose.
The technique, structure and form of my paintings demand a practiced use of positive and negative space and chi/flow, regardless of medium.
I use restraint when I paint, all while portraying a spontaneous style and outcome. Ink has no original form and so permits me to speak fluidly and without words. This medium allows me to create landscapes and images that depict an imaginary world of zen and relaxation, that hint at memories of more familiar Canadian terrains.
My intent is to provide that ‘aha’ moment for a viewer. It can be the realization of an inner calm, or ‘I’ve never thought of it, that way, until now’.
Others have called my art ethereal, soothing, mysterious and Canadian, with a twist.
