Marianne Morris
Artist Statement
For some time now, I’ve been interested in the Japanese idea Shinrin-yoku, or “Forest Bathing”
as a form of self care. Dealing with the stress caused by the pandemic, I began photographing
the local plant life on daily walks, and spending time sketching in the various gardens I had
access to. The more time I spent in nature, the more I realized the disconnect between the
natural order of things and the way society had evolved. Utilizing various text based elements
collected from printed books, newspapers and internet headlines, I began collaging my vision of
“society” on my supports, then using plant imagery based on my photos and sketches to
incorporate a sense of peacefulness.
I am continuing to explore these ideas, centering specific themes and plant imagery that both
confirms and contradicts these collage elements. I see potential for a large body of work that
explores trends and issues I see being discussed in the news and on various social media
platforms.
